When Being Told You Look Like a Man is a Good Thing

March 4, 2015 By Caroline TeSelle

like a man

A few weeks ago I spent a weekend in Charlotte with Myquillyn, Emily & Kendra. It was just what my soul needed at that time. A quiet weekend away, surrounded by good friends & great conversations.

On Saturday afternoon we shopped around for a few hours at The Depot at Gibson Mill, a huge antique mall. Each of us had a few things in mind that we were looking for but what’s fun about antique stores – you find something you weren’t looking for and it just jumps out at you! Amazingly, each of us found something that was uniquely for us. But Myquillyn found something that made us giggly happy. More on that in a minute…

red 6

I saw this red metal “6” and knew we needed it for our gallery wall. This wall is full of quirky fun & memories & reminders. I’m loving how it’s slowly coming together.

Back to what Myquillyn found. It’s fabulous. It’s so fabulous that it will probably have it’s own website one day. She found a top hat. Not just any top hat. Think Abraham Lincoln size top hat. She snatched it up as soon as she saw it and carried it around for a while. The rest of us were convinced that it was a definite purchase but she was wavering a bit. It was a little more than she would normally spend.

We got in line to pay for our purchases and took turns trying on the hat. I put it on and Emily immediately said, “You look like Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland!”, so I made them take a few pictures. I wasn’t annoyed at all that my friends thought I looked like a man, I mean, what woman wouldn’t want to be compared to him? He’s beautiful. Even as the Mad Hatter! Especially as the Mad Hatter!

Isn’t it an amazing hat? I don’t care if it makes me look like a man! It may be a little extravagant but we convinced her that spending a few extra dollars on this top hat was already worth it after all the fun we had taking turns trying it on!

To learn more about this top hat & the joy it brought us that day, you need to listen to the Hope*ologie podcast for March called Treat Yo’ Self. Kendra and I had the amazing privilege of being their guests this month & I couldn’t wait to tell you about it. {All the Hope*ologie podcasts are available on iTunes – click here}.

Consider joining the Hope*ologie community – a place where each month, you can find rest and encouragement for your home, family, and soul – Read more about it here.

Speaking of podcasts, Kendra & her sister have a podcast too! It’s called Sugar in the Raw. You should add it to your podcast subscription list – it will make you all kinds of happy!

…is hang out with these yahoos where fun is a consequence 🤣

Today we had our “yay, it’s summer!” meal of breakfast foods at a local cafe. We started this tradition when they were little and I realized today that we only have three of these left. 😭 That’s not fun.
#OneDayMay May 25 - A struggle right now is…

…in the words of Steve Kerr, “When are we going to do something?”

I’ve struggled for years, especially in my childhood, wondering if my voice mattered.

As an adult, I’ve grown to learn that my voice matters. Whether or not you disagree with the what I’m saying, it matters.

It’s a voice that needs to be heard.

It’s a voice that is here, at this point in time, during this span of 1972 until I die, for such a time as this—to speak up for the innocent, the abused, the least of these.

I’ve heard the phrase, “not every issue has our name on it.” I believe that is true to a certain extent. I can’t possibly support every issue or cause. I would be exhausted and bankrupt.

But friends, gun violence has every American name on it.

Something needs to be done because the way it is now is unacceptable.

When are we going to do something?

Now.

A question for all of us: I wonder what art will be produced from our current season of suffering and stabbing joys? 🤔 ⁣

#OneDayMay May 19 - I’m proud of myself for…⁣
⁣
…allowing myself to be taken care of the past few years. That’s hard for me to admit 😘 because I am usually the one taking care of others. ⁣
⁣
But my body finally said enough or it was the quiet pride building up in my heart that had finally had enough. My heart was literally enlarged and I could barely make it out of bed most days much less take care of others! ⁣
⁣
The pandemic has been horrible in so many ways but it brought our family closer. ⁣
⁣
Between my health and Eden’s hip reconstruction, the men in our family rallied and have taken such great care of us. And the support from family and friends has been life-giving. 💛⁣
⁣
Here we are, two years later and I’m still advocating for my health (that will never stop!) and allowing others to take care of me (I hope I don’t let my pride get in the way of that either!).⁣
⁣
Another surgery in the morning, friends. This time, a team of doctors and nurses will be closing the PFO (hole in my heart) with a tiny “umbrella”. Amazing, right? I’m so thankful. ☂️❤️‍🩹⁣
⁣
The hope is by closing this hole it will reduce the risk of a future stroke. After all the tests they’ve done the past few months, the doctors believe the cause of my mini-stroke back in December was due to a small clot escaping through that hole and up into my brain.⁣

⁣
I hope to keep up with the #OneDayMay prompts after tomorrow because I have loved this challenge and also have enjoyed reading what others have shared. ⁣
⁣
Until then, much love to each of you and your families 🥰
