When Being Told You Look Like a Man is a Good Thing

March 4, 2015 By Caroline TeSelle

like a man

A few weeks ago I spent a weekend in Charlotte with Myquillyn, Emily & Kendra. It was just what my soul needed at that time. A quiet weekend away, surrounded by good friends & great conversations.

On Saturday afternoon we shopped around for a few hours at The Depot at Gibson Mill, a huge antique mall. Each of us had a few things in mind that we were looking for but what’s fun about antique stores – you find something you weren’t looking for and it just jumps out at you! Amazingly, each of us found something that was uniquely for us. But Myquillyn found something that made us giggly happy. More on that in a minute…

red 6

I saw this red metal “6” and knew we needed it for our gallery wall. This wall is full of quirky fun & memories & reminders. I’m loving how it’s slowly coming together.

Back to what Myquillyn found. It’s fabulous. It’s so fabulous that it will probably have it’s own website one day. She found a top hat. Not just any top hat. Think Abraham Lincoln size top hat. She snatched it up as soon as she saw it and carried it around for a while. The rest of us were convinced that it was a definite purchase but she was wavering a bit. It was a little more than she would normally spend.

We got in line to pay for our purchases and took turns trying on the hat. I put it on and Emily immediately said, “You look like Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland!”, so I made them take a few pictures. I wasn’t annoyed at all that my friends thought I looked like a man, I mean, what woman wouldn’t want to be compared to him? He’s beautiful. Even as the Mad Hatter! Especially as the Mad Hatter!
treat yo self top hat fun

Isn’t it an amazing hat? I don’t care if it makes me look like a man! It may be a little extravagant but we convinced her that spending a few extra dollars on this top hat was already worth it after all the fun we had taking turns trying it on!

To learn more about this top hat & the joy it brought us that day, you need to listen to the Hope*ologie podcast for March called Treat Yo’ Self. Kendra and I had the amazing privilege of being their guests this month & I couldn’t wait to tell you about it. {All the Hope*ologie podcasts are available on iTunes – click here}.

Consider joining the Hope*ologie community – a place where each month, you can find rest and encouragement for your home, family, and soul – Read more about it here.

Speaking of podcasts, Kendra & her sister have a podcast too! It’s called Sugar in the Raw. You should add it to your podcast subscription list – it will make you all kinds of happy!

At O’Hare waiting to board a plane back to Ashev At O’Hare waiting to board a plane back to Asheville.

The past eight days have been a whirlwind: watching a hilarious murder-mystery comedy play, hosting the after-party (even though we went to bed 🤣), Super Bowl, dinner with girlfriends, thyroid biopsy, waiting two days for the results—benign 🙌🏻, early 26th anniversary dinner, book club, Amazing Race marathon, spring musical auditions…and all the moments in between.

Thankful. Embracing this current season of life & holding on tight.
Yesterday morning, I boarded a plane in Asheville Yesterday morning, I boarded a plane in Asheville headed to Chicago. I’ve been back and forth the past four months helping my mom and dad in Asheville.

I was flying back to Chicago to see Stone and Eden’s winter play, Murder Can Be Habit-Forming—a comedy about a serial killer that ends up in a convent full of Marys! It was a hilarious! Great job, Stone (as Professor Lewis) & Eden (Asst. Stage Manager)! ⁣
⁣
It was a small plane and I was seated in the last row of the plane at the window with one seat next to me. Across the aisle was the toilet. Prime seating!⁣
⁣
An older woman wearing a Connecticut sweatshirt sat down in the seat next to me and we exchanged hellos and commented on our choice of seats and how lucky we were. 😉⁣
⁣
Normally, I’m quiet on planes. Reading my book, listening to music, resting. But this woman intrigued me. She sparked my curiosity. ⁣
⁣
She had a New York accent so I asked if Asheville was home or if she was traveling home. She replied, “Now don’t get me crying,” and proceeded to tell me how she was traveling to Palm Springs to be with her friend when she received her guide dog. ⁣
⁣
We kept chatting the entire hour and twenty minute flight. I’m sure the other passengers were annoyed with us but we didn’t care. Peg was a joy!⁣
⁣
When the flight attendant finally got to us with the drink cart, I ordered a cup of ice so I could finish my Sprite that I had bought in the terminal. Peg ordered an orange juice so she could mix it with the tiny bottle of vodka she took out of her purse. ⁣
⁣
I poured my Sprite into my cup of ice, watched it fizz up, and put the bottle back on the tray table. (Continued in comments)
