On the weekends of our 31 Days of Love and Hate…. Caroline and I will be a little less serious in our posts… maybe even downright funny. But as we all know… there is always a little truth in most humor.
My weekend “hate posts” will probably fall under the “pet peeve” category.
So onward… but probably not upward today… as we read today’s “words of hate”.
Over the last 20 years of being in the “working world”… I have had co-workers and bosses who confuse doing something for a long time with being good at it. Ever have any of these people in your life?
I swear, if I hear another middle-aged person look condescendingly at someone else and say, “I’ve been doing this for 20 years,” I am going to jump off a bridge into an alligator pit wearing nothing but a steak necklace and alligator boots!
Doing something a long time doesn’t mean you are good at it NOW!
Look… I played basketball for years before a good coach saw me shooting free throws… laughed at me… and then told me the right way to do it. I could have been doing it my old/wrong way for 20 years… and I still wouldn’t have been GOOD.
Just because you have worked somewhere or done something for a long time doesn’t automatically make you good at it.
I don’t care if you have been in the business for 20 years… if you are not producing NOW… with new ideas that work NOW… you have become out-dated, and your voice/product is not longer relevant.
You must continue to update, be bold, and try the new… better yet… create the new.
I think I hate “The Experience Card” because it smells of the ugly aroma of arrogance.
(maybe some foreshadowing here… check back Monday)
