Yes, we love March Madness around here and that means the television will be on when there’s a college basketball game being played.
You have heard me say that I am a HUGE Tar Heel fan! Ever since I was a kid, we have watched Carolina basketball. We would either watch the game if it was televised or we would sit in our living room surrounding the radio that was tuned to the Tar Heel Basketball AM radio station. We were a dedicated family. My mom would even keep track of the score and stats in her game book. From November to March we would know when the Tar Heels were playing.
I’m not sure when the Tar Heel love started for my parents, but for me, it was when we were huddled around the television or the radio. It was one way our family became close.
For the TeSelles, when we watch basketball games or any sporting event, one of our kids always ask, “Who do you want to win?” Our answer is always, “It doesn’t matter. It’s just a game.”
My kids are smart though. They have learned to not ask that question to me when the Tar Heels are playing. The answer will always be “Tar Heels!!”. It’s in my blood – you know the song, right?
I’m a Tar Heel born, I’m a Tar Heel bred.
And when I die, I’m a Tar Heel dead.
So it’s rah-rah, Car’lina-‘lina!
Rah-rah, Car’lina-‘lina!
Rah-rah, Car’lina-‘lina!
Rah, rah, rah!
Um, excuse the flashback to my childhood. Back to reality now…
Obviously, we are trying to teach them how to be a fan of the game and not turn into a fanatic. That competition can be fun and you can still cheer for your favorite team without letting it affect your attitude if they do not win.
Life isn’t about basketball and who wins the game. It’s about spending time together as a family doing something you love and during the month of March, we love to watch college basketball.
What’s something that your family loves to do together?
